Before You Were Born, Black Americans Had to Follow These Rules

There was once a rulebook in America that governed nearly every second of a Black person's public life. Where you could look. How you could speak. Which door you could enter. When you had to step aside. What a stranger was allowed to call you — and what you could never call them back.

Break one of these rules — even by accident, even by a look held a second too long — and the price could be humiliation, your job, a beating, or worse. And here's the part that will get under your skin: this rulebook was never written down. Yet every Black person in America knew it by heart, because their lives depended on it.

This was not a hundred years ago. Your grandparents lived by these rules. Some of the people who lived by them are still alive today. This is the real, unwritten code — the actual rules — and the one deeper rule beneath all of them that explains this entire era.
